LET'S REGISTER ON THE ELECTORAL ROLL: OVFC' S OCTOBER CAMPAIGN

Let’s register on the electoral roll and encourage our neighbours to do the same.

Foreign residents wishing to vote in the forthcoming local elections in May 2027 must be registered on the electoral roll by 31 December. Once registered, EU citizens do not need to renew their registration on the electoral roll. Citizens of non-EU countries with which Spain has reciprocity agreements must register for each election up to three months before the election is called. The deadline is 31 December.

In the 2023 municipal elections, only 15% of foreign nationals were registered on the electoral roll. The Town Council seems keen for things to stay the same as they do not encourage foreign residents to register on the electoral roll. We have to do it ourselves.

Registering on the electoral roll is very easy:

WHY TO REGISTER ON THE ELECTORAL ROLL?
  1. Because if we don’t register, we can’t vote. If we don’t vote, the council will continue to collect most of the revenue from Cumbre del Sol and invest it solely in the village. The Council collects more than 60% of the municipal revenue from Cumbre del Sol and spends less than 10% in our urbanization. In other words, we are funding the village without receiving adequate compensation in return.
  2. Because no resurfacing work has been carried out since 2022, despite the poor condition of the roads.
  3. Because the streets are not cleaned nor cleared properly. A team of just two people is not enough to clear 70 km of roads. More cleaning staff are needed.
  4. Because there is no investment in replacing the old drinking water supply pipes. Water leaks and burst pipes are common, and repairs are only temporary.
  5. Because the Town Council does not publish its accounts, budgets, minutes of plenary sessions, signed contracts,... nor does it comply with the Transparency Act.
  6. Because citizen participation is not encouraged.
  7. Because there are no information campaigns to encourage registration on the municipal register or the electoral roll.
  8. Because the Council has no interest in maintaining a municipal office in Cumbre del Sol.
  9. Because we are a multi-national and multilingual community with the same rights as those born in the municipality.
  10. Because the Council rejects proposals for participatory budgeting, unlike other municipalities in the Marina Alta.
  11. Because we have the highest rubbish collection charge for holiday homes in the Marina Alta: up to 812€ and the council does not provide the report on which the calculation of the refuse collection charge is based.
  12. Because the Council fails to respond to the instances submitted, despite being obliged to do so.
  13. Because investment priorities are focused exclusively on the village.
  14. Because the local council has more than tripled the cadastral values in Cumbre del Sol without changing the property tax rate resulting in an unjustified increase in the tax burden. The local council will triple its revenue without explaining how the extra income will be spent. 
  15. Because Benitatxell has the highest average cadastral value in the province of Alicante.
  16. Because the average property tax bill per home is at the higher end of the scale in the Valencian Community.
For all these reasons and more:
  • Let’s all register on the electoral roll so we can vote in the May 2027 elections.
  • Let’s make it clear that we make up the majority of the municipality’s population.
  • Let’s make it clear that we are the ones who contribute most to the council’s revenue.
  • Let us urge the Council to reallocate municipal expenditure appropriately.
  • Let’s show solidarity and stand up for the interests of Cumbre del Sol
