Electricity savings resulting from the conversion of street lighting to LED technology
The Council will auction the rights to the electricity savings generated after renewing the public lighting, a pioneering system that will allow obtaining around 40.000€.
El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has launched an innovative formula to transform energy efficiency into income for the municipality. After the renovation of public lighting with LED technology, the Council has not only reduced electricity consumption and energy bills, but will now auction the rights to the savings achieved.
Energy Savings Certificates
The mechanism is based on the state system of Energy Savings Certificates (CAE). The regulations oblige large energy companies to meet energy saving targets or, failing that, to compensate them financially. When a public administration reduces its consumption through energy efficiency actions, these savings can become an economic right that can be acquired by these companies.
In the case of Benitatxell, the modernisation of the lighting has generated an estimated saving of more than 312,000 kWh per year, which the Council will put up for public auction so that interested companies compete to acquire these rights.
This achievement is part of the municipal energy strategy promoted from the energy audit developed in collaboration with the consulting firm Azigrene S.L. This planning has allowed the Council to access different lines of financing from various administrations and promote actions to improve energy efficiency, within a line of work that continues to give positive results for the municipality. Specifically, it is expected that the operation will allow around 40.000€ to be obtained, which are added to the permanent savings in the municipal electricity bill.
A model of efficiency with a triple benefit
The renovation of a large part of the lighting was carried out with public helps, which allowed practically the entire system to be modernised with a very low economic impact for the municipality. Thanks to LED technology, the municipality consumes less energy, pays less for electricity and will now also be able to generate new income from these savings.
With this initiative, Benitatxell is among the first municipalities in the province to apply this mechanism, which makes it possible to make the most of investments in energy efficiency.
The mayor, Miguel Ángel García, stressed that «the objective is that every euro that is saved in energy is invested in improving public services. With this formula we demonstrate that betting on sustainability is also a way to better manage public resources».
In this way, an energy efficiency action generates a multiple benefit for the municipality: improvement of public service, reduction of energy consumption and generation of new economic resources without increasing the tax pressure on residents.
