OVFC OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR REGARDING CURRENT RUBBISH COLLECTION FAILINGS

We are writing today to express the considerable distress and some anger at the situation of the rubbish and recycling on Cumbre del Sol and its surrounding areas.
After nearly 3 years of discussions with those of you responsible for the rubbish and recycling in Benitachell, nothing has changed on Cumbre del Sol. These are the types of questions we are being asked:
- Why is it a surprise that the population more than quadruples from the end of June? Each year the holiday population increases!
- Why is it a surprise that the Patronal Fiesta in the village creates extra work and therefore a workforce shortage on Cumbre del Sol during these two weeks of July?
We were forced to ask for more bins and igloos to be brought up to Cumbre and to date very few have arrived. Surely these should have been in place in May before the holiday season began? We understand that many of the men operating the collection system take a holiday over the fiesta time and so the collections are less, while the rubbish and recycling increases!
In addition, you will remember that we advised that taking the rubbish to a collection point was not a destination. Holiday makers do not make a special journey with rubbish!, It is something we do when we leave the mountain and we place it in bins on the way. Therefore you will find that the north entrance point is underused (it is hidden away, no signs) and that Valle del Portet and Mercadona are overflowing into the road. We were concerned that there was no large collection point at the south entrance and we predicted problems for Valle del Portet. Sadly that is now the case.
What is even worse is that visitors are no longer recycling in their house as there is nowhere to recycle at the bins.
This situation is intolerable. It is disgusting. We are ashamed of what is happening. Our environment is being damaged and many of these rubbish points are actually beside peoples homes, giving health concerns. Social media, as you will know, is full of anger. Taxes have increased, house prices have increased and yet rubbish is piled high as the system fails. The anger towards the Town Hall and its government is not helpful to any of us as we work towards respect and collaboration.
We are sure that you will, of course, move to clean all areas. We ask for more bins and igloos so that we are allowed to recycle. We ask for notices ON THE BINS, as previously suggested and we ask for a meeting in September where we discuss the reality and the practical solutions.
We remain willing to work with you constructively on this problem. We hope that you will take into account our suggested solutions as we are living with it daily. We are committed to a successful outcome which is to everyone's benefit.

Las quejas por el mal funcionamiento del servicio de basuras en época estival son comprensibles y justas. No se entiende que Poblenet no sea capaz de anticipar medidas para paliar la acumulación de basura cuando se conocen a priori las consecuencias de la combinación del aumento de población, la escasez de contenedores y la insuficiente frecuencia de recogida. Se debería además suplir la ausencia de los operarios de vacaciones sin que ello afecte al servicio de recogida. Una solución temporal de ayuda al servicio de recogida sería la contratación en época estival de un servicio de refuerzo. El poner más contenedores y señalizar la situación de los 14 nuevos puntos de recogida y poner pegatinas en cada contenedor para que no haya dudas de qué basura depositar es realmente sencillo de implementar. Tan sólo se necesita voluntad.
ReplyDeleteRecientemente el Ayuntamiento hizo publico un remanente del presupuesto de 2024 superior a 2 millones de euros. En ese mismo año tuvo lugar un incremento del 290% de la tasa de basura de las viviendas turísticas con una tarifa récord en toda la comarca de 390€ por vivienda. El servicio no ha mejorado con lo cual se deduce que se ha aplicado la subida íntegramente para cubrir el déficit de tarifa.
Fomentar la separación y el reciclaje requiere una dotación suficiente de contenedores y una frecuencia de recogida adecuada y flexible. El Ayuntamiento puede contar con la colaboración de todos los ciudadanos.

Well done and well said to the person who wrote this article. When is the VAPF open day, I would imagine that the bins would be emptied and the grass cut by then. I would also imagine that this will become a health issue shortly. Wlho would come to live on Cumbre with all this. Some of the roads are also in a dreadful state also. I think this letter should be put up on Facebook. Show the world, I dont think that Benitachell village cares what goes on on the cumbre, the appear to be only interested in the financial benifits of the Cumbre.

ReplyDeleteA Kalmias, je peux vous certifier qu'il y a de gros rats des champs. Hier, j'ai encore vu une camionnette remplie de vieux tapis s'arrêter. Le chauffeur est sorti, a vu que je le regardais, a regardé les poubelles et est reparti, sans décharger... J'ai retrouvé les tapis à la poubelle en bas de la descente, près du Mercadona. Tant que la ville laisse faire, rien ne bougera. Aujourd'hui, c'est tellement simple de mettre de petites caméras dissuasives.... c'est juste une question de volonté politique. Les ramassages étaient bien plus nombreux et de meilleures qualités l'année dernière. Ils pourraient au minimum indiquer sur chaque site un panneau avec l'indication de l'endroit où se trouve le parc où jeter les encombrants.
