PETITION FOR THE CV-740 NORTHERN BYPASS
- Starting point: Begins at the junction with the N-332 road in Teulada.
- Itinerary: Heads eastwards, passing through the town centre of Teulada. It continues south/south-east, entering the town centre of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell (via Avenida de Alicante and Calle Padre PlĂ¡cido).
- Final point: From Benitachell, the road heads north, connecting with JĂ¡vea in the Cansalades / Golf Club area, ending at the junction with the CV-734.
In October 2025, the extraordinary plenary session held at El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Town Hall unanimously agreed to request that the Alicante Provincial Council include a budget allocation to carry out the first phase of the CV-740 ring road. This critical infrastructure project aims to divert traffic away from the town center, improving local safety and reducing congestion (4).
Given the
current deadlock surrounding the project, OVFC is calling for a petition to be carried out by the
Town Hall, urging the Alicante Provincial Council to approve the
necessary budget allocation.
As reported
by the Town Council, “at present, more than 32.000 vehicles pass through the
town centre every day via the CV-740 and CV-737 provincial roads, without any
real provision for safety, accessibility or urban coexistence”. Heavy traffic
travels along streets such as Padre PlĂ¡cido and Capelletes, “with sections
where the carriageway is less than 4.5 metres wide and pavements less than 75
cm wide”, in areas surrounding schools, residential areas and commercial
districts. The result is a constant risk to pedestrians and frequent traffic
gridlock.” (1)
GuĂa Consultores, the firm that has been working on the project, estimates that the first phase of the bypass – which would tackle the problem at Padre PlĂ¡cido, the most problematic section – will cost around 5.3 million euros. In addition, there would be two further phases: one for the approach via the XĂ bia road and another for the Moraira section, the cost of which has not yet been finalised.
The
president of the Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, has indicated that the Provincial
Council does not usually fund projects of this scale, although he has expressed
a willingness to explore all possibilities together with Councillor Arturo
Poquet and the Council’s roads department staff. The meeting also raised the
possibility of collaborating with other authorities to ensure that this project
can go ahead (2)
Chronology of the bypass project:
14/06/2019: Plans are in place for a northern bypass that will connect the CV-740 from
the Teulada entrance via a new roundabout to be built near the golf course.
This bypass will have two slip roads providing access to CamĂ de l'Abiar and
the town centre (3).
03/10/2025: An extraordinary plenary session unanimously approves a motion to request
funding from the Provincial Council for the CV-740 bypass (4).
01/12/2025: The President of the Alicante Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, and the
Councillor for Roads, Arturo Poquet, visit Benitatxell to assess the traffic
problems affecting the CV-740 as it passes through the town centre. Town Hall
engineers explained the route of the bypass project.
