Parking in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell can become more than just a mere formality. After several months of work to adapt the space, the Town Council has opened a new car park to the public at the entrance to the municipality on the Carretera Vella de Xàbia, which is more than just that. Taking advantage of its strategic location, it offers one of the best panoramic views of the municipality, overlooking vineyards, the sea and mountains such as Montgó, Bèrnia and Tossal Gros. Hence, it has been named Parking El Mirador.

This is the sixth new car park that the current council has opened in the last seven years, bringing the total number of car parks in the town centre and its surroundings to 12.

This project has been carried out thanks to grants for investments in unique local clean energy projects in municipalities facing demographic challenges (PROGRAMA DUS 5000), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with a total investment of €772,307 (€315,543 subsidised).

The car park has a total of 67 spaces for cars, two of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility. It also has two charging points for electric vehicles, one of which is linked to one of the accessible spaces. The facilities are completed with spaces for parking seven motorcycles, one personal mobility vehicle and bicycles.

In addition to the car park itself, the existing pavement has been extended to the municipal cemetery, thus providing safety and accessibility for pedestrians, who can walk from the town centre to this park-and-ride facility in just a few minutes.

The El Mirador car park project has been designed as a transitional element between the town centre and the natural environment, prioritising landscape integration and respect for the environment. In this regard, the works have been carried out in accordance with criteria of sustainability and adaptation to the existing landscape. It has also been possible to give it an urban focus and make one of the main entrances to the municipality visually attractive, with views from the road to the church of Santa María Magdalena.

The earth retaining structures have been resolved by means of stone masonry walls, with the aim of blending in with the adjacent vineyard terraces. The cobblestone paving has been laid on drainage layers that allow rainwater to be collected and stored in the ground itself, promoting soil moisture conservation and preventing surface runoff, which contributes to the preservation of plant species and the natural characteristics of the terrain.

The vegetation has been organised into three layers — trees, hedges and ground cover plants — using only species native to the area. Carob, olive, orange, cypress, hackberry, tipuana and mulberry trees have been selected for the tree layer in the tree pits near the pavement. As an identifying feature of the car park, grapevines have been chosen for the second level, along with hibiscus, viburnum and olive trees. Aromatic species such as rosemary, thyme, lavender, sage and lavender have been planted in the ground cover layer.

Finally, the railings have been designed with a minimal visual presence, using untreated steel rounds, so that over time they will blend naturally into the environment.
