The UK Government has now confirmed that changes to the State Pension system will take effect from April 2026. For anyone living in Spain who has previously worked in the UK, this is an important deadline.

From April 2026:

• Access to Class 2 National Insurance contributions will be removed
• A minimum 10-year UK contribution history will be required to make voluntary payments
• Many people may lose the ability to top up their State Pension altogether
