Like every year, the elderly residents of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell have their own week. The Association of Retired People and Pensioners, in collaboration with the Councillorship of the Elderly, has organised a wide range of activities especially designed for them from October 13th to 19th.
The events will begin on Monday 13th at 7 pm at the Social Centre with a unique and unprecedented event this week: the colloquium “Women of the village, universal voices”, which will be attended by La Marina Alta writers Pepa Guardiola, Elvira Cambrils and Irene Ballester. It will be hosted by journalist and teacher Eloïsa Vidal, and will address, from a gender perspective, different topics such as the visibility of women protagonists in their works, village identity, and the promotion of traditions and voices. It will also address the importance of listening to the elderly in decision-making. An aperitif will be served afterwards.
On Tuesday 14th, an excursion to the Albufera and the Fallas Museum in Valencia has been scheduled. Priced at €25 for members and €40 for non-members, it includes a bus trip there and back, a boat trip, a visit to a barraca (traditional hut), lunch and a visit to the Fallas Museum in Valencia. The activity is only available if a minimum number of people sign up. To sign up, just get in touch with the association’s chairperson, Mónica Garcia, by Tuesday October 7th. We’ll be leaving from the bus stop at the cemetery at 9am.
The programme will continue on Wednesday 15th with a film forum on the film “Tierra baja” (Lowland), part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s “National Film and Rural Women Cycle”. The film tells the story of Carmen, a well-known screenwriter who retires to a lonely farmhouse in a village of Teruel. There, she strives to increase the olive harvest on the farm she inherited from her grandmother, with the help of two friends who admire her and Damián, a handyman who is attracted to her. An old love reappears in her life to tell her that he never forgot her. Afterwards, coca maria and mistela will be served.
On Thursday 16th the bingo will be held in the afternoon and there will be a mariachi show at 10 pm at the Social Centre, while on Friday 17th, at 10 pm, the same venue will host the play “Salsa picante” by Siete Comediantes.
To conclude the week, on Saturday 18th, starting at 8.30 pm, there will be an aperitif followed by Toni Català’s ball. On Sunday 19th, the grand finale will be the mass in honour of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, sung by the Parish Choir, and the traditional fellowship meal in Salones Canor. The meal can be booked until October 15th by contacting the president of the Retirees’ Association, Mónica García. The price is €25 for members and €35 for non-members. This year, the bus to the restaurant will make two stops: one at Lady Elizabeth School at 1:30 p.m. ( previous booking required) and another at 1:45 p.m. at Placeta d’Hernández.
