Validity of foreign driving licences:

Licences issued in countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are valid for driving on Spanish roads. However, certain conditions must be met:
  • That the licence is within the period of validity.
  • The licence must be exchanged after six months from the moment you obtain residency.
If you are a citizen from a country outside the European Union (See Specific information for the British) and you come to live in Spain, you will need to exchange your license after six months from the moment you obtain residency to be able to drive in Spain and import your vehicle if you plan to bring it.

A licence exchange involves the validation of a driving licence you have for an equivalent one issued by the DGT. At the time of carrying out the procedure, your original licence will be withdrawn.

Exchanging a driving licence includes the validation of all the driving licences you had in your country of origin. That is, if in your country you had a motorbike, car and bus licence, when you exchange it you will have these same licences on your Spanish licence. You do not need to exchange one for each type of licence you have.

If you are a resident of Spain, you can exchange driving licenses issued in:

  • Countries of the European Union
  • European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)
  • Countries with which there is an agreement for exchanging driving licenses. See the countries with which this agreement exists .
  • Countries without an agreement in the case of professional permits.
